Zynab B. Kamara
Zynab Binta Kamara is an experienced development practitioner at Action Aid International in Sierra Leone, who climbed the ladder from being the Personal Assistant to the Country Director to Manager of the Moyamba District Local Rights Programme, a position she has held since 2009.
Among her onerous duties as Manager are: Preparing strategic and operational plans for the development of an integrated rural development programme within the district in line with Action Aid’s Strategic Plan and in consultation with relevant stakeholders; Zynab also takes the lead in directing the work of the District in implementing programme and project plans, bearing in mind the overall goal of sustainable poverty eradication; added to all of this she maintains and supervises sponsorship administration systems consistent with organizational policies and guidelines and as may be directed from time to time; she also conducts budgetary planning and supervise financial reporting systems.
Zynab's career objective is to be part of Policy change and ensure development, safety & security in all its forms for vulnerable people especially women and girls and to broaden her vision by exposing herself to more humanitarian work & developmental opportunities.
Zynab holds a MSc. degree in development studies which she attained in 2006 from London South Bank University in London, UK. Her dissertation was on "Critical Analysis of the Effect of National and Customary Laws on Gender Relations in Sierra Leone."
In 1991 she graduated from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone with a BA General degree in English and Political Science where her dissertation was on "Decentralisation and Democracy
Principles and Activities of “Cause Canada” (NGO) in Sierra Leone."
Zynab's strong base was contributed to by several secondary schools in Freetown and Bo, starting with St. Joseph's Secondary School. She continued at Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School in Bo and Services Secondary School in Freetown for her GCE O' Levels. She did her GCE A' Levels at St. Edwards Secondary School in Freetown.
At Action Aid International Sierra Leone, Zynab has worked in the following positions: Human Security in Conflict & Emergencies Coordinator; Access to Justice for Women (A2JW) Coordinator; National Violence Against Women (VAW) Coordinator & Human Security Focal Person; and National Common Wealth Education Fund (CEF) Coordinator
Zynab also has experience working in other offices. These include working as legal secretary at ANGEL SOLICITORS, London; Secretary at ABBOT & CO. SOLICITORS, London; Head Customer Information Service at Guranty Trust Bank PLC; Monitor at CAMPAIGN FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE, Freetown; and administrative secretary at. MILLENNIUM COMMUNICATIONS, Freetown.
It would be surprising to many that Zynab has been an actress; acting in several stage, television productions bringing out critical national issues on awareness raising and movies.
Only when the following skills profile is considered that the vasality of Zynab's expertise could be understood. She worked with the National team to develop a Training Manual for the Sierra Leone Police; Worked with the National Committee on Gender Based Violence to Review our National Bills on Domestic Violence, Customary Marriages and Matrimonial Clauses; Was part of the Review team for the National Disaster Management Plan; was Part of the Review team for the Bill on Arms & Ammunition; she Trained Sierra Leone Police Personnel and Social Workers on Women’s Right and Gender Based Violence; she Trained Traditional & Religious Leaders on Gender Based Violence; worked with Women’s Forum Sierra Leone to develop an Operational Plan on their work on Gender Based Violence; she was part of the Review team for the Bill on Sexual Offences & Matrimonial Clauses; Worked with Action Aid Gambia on responding to the Sahel Drought; is a Member of Action Aid’s Emergency Fast Track Team; is a Trainer for Action Aid’s Reflection Action Methodology; Trainer on Participatory Methodologies; and a Presenter of ActionAid Sierra Leone’s position on Women’s Right at the 2014 Global Summit on Ending Sexual and Gender Based Violence.
